Heading out on the highway during the busy holiday season can be stressful, which makes proper preparation even more important.

While preparing your vehicle and adjusting your speed can be helpful, Ken Shields, an Allstate agent in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, would like to focus on distracted driving.

“Not long ago, I found myself in a hurry and I was trying to communicate a brief message by text while driving.  I took my eyes off the road for just a few seconds and then I heard a thud from the front of my car,” he says. “I looked up to see the plastic pedestrian crossing sign flying through the air and bouncing to the curb.  It was one of those signs put up to remind drivers that people have the right of way and may be crossing.  In just a few distracted moments I completely missed it and sent it flying through the air.  All I could think about was how lucky I was that it was only a sign.  I pulled over and sat for a few minutes to let things sink in.”

Shields adds, “Let’s all add one more rule to our driving this year and into the New Year. No more texting, chatting, tweeting or device impairment.”

In addition to distracted driving, the infographic below offers a few simple travel tips to help you prepare for the roadways this holiday season.
